Her father had always warned her not to dare so much, not to dream for the impossible. Be content with the same things, find peace in afternoon naps or a cool glass of fresh milk or the sunshine on a spring morning. A dutiful daughter, Malon had reigned in her wild streak and concentrated on the cost of hay and the selling price of eggs and the patterns of rain. But, when the opportunity had presented itself, Malon had leapt blindly toward an uncertain future.
She had gambled and won - in her possession were priceless jewels and jewelry with names like Circle of Fire or Goddess' Tears, gowns of silk and velvet that whispered against her skin when she walked, horses in every color and pattern imaginable, a castle that sat on a hill and overlooked the green hills of the kingdom.
Hers. Hers.
He said so, murmuring promises against her sweat-slick neck as they entwined together. Anything that she could ever want was reachable; if she could dream it, he could bring it to her.
Except -
He dragged his fingers under the curve of her breast and growled curses and prayers in his strange language and made her sob his name, but, even so, Malon understood that she couldn't be granted everything.
She could never truly have him, and her other winnings were rendered worthless.
