Daisuke crept down the steel staircase, mindful of every whisper of a sound that reached his ears. He had slipped out of his sneakers as to muffle his footsteps but his brainstorm had not taken into consideration the clicking of Vmon's claws against the metal. Still, convinced that he was some sort of ninja spy, Daisuke slid down the stairs in his socks.
The lights which had been dim when he had snuck into the Kaiser's base were gradually growing brigther. Daisuke figured that the closer he got to the Kaier -the further he wormed into the heart of the base- the less ability he'd have to hide. his eyes opened suddenly as an epiphany occured - the Kaiser probably already knew of his entrance.
"Shit," he cursed quietly, causing Vmon to murmur in concern behind him. It was a fool's errand, his task, but Daisuke couldn't turn back. All his boastings and crowing had painted him into a corner; he couldn't turn tail and run without completely his task, now. And if the Kaiser did find him before Daisuke could finish his mission, well, then he'd be dead and woudn't they feel stupid then! That'd wipe the smirking smile off Takeru's perfect face. Ha! Hikari would probably cry and blame herself, too. Daisuke warmed a bit at that thought, at least someone would miss him.
The winding, spiral staircase dumped him at the end of a hall that was heavy with a foreboding silence. Diasuke gulped and tried to smile reassuringly at the little blue monter at his side. It'd all be all right. It had to be. Daisuke was the hero, after all, and heroes didn't die in the middle of the story.
On tiptoes, Daisuke approached the door at the end of the hallway. Through that baracade was the Kaiser's computer room; he had learned from a former slave of the emperor that the room was filled with screens that showed every inch of the Digital World. All Daisuke had to do (if he made it that far!) was put Izumi-kun's device thingamajig on the central computer and then he'd be able to return. Daisuke's fingers reached into his pocket and tightened around the small, black device. Izumi-kun had said something about it monitering the Kaiser, spying on him, or something like that - point was that it gave them an advantage over their adversary. And Daisuke had volunteered for the job.
Each step caused his heart to beat all the more frantically. He was mere feet away from the door now, so close to the monster's lair that Daisuke could nearly taste the danger in the air. His slippery, sweating hands pushed the door open ever so slighly... There. There, he had made it to the computer room.
"Ah, Motomiya, you've come at last."
The voice was soft and amicable; the Kaiser was greeting a friend, not frightening an enemy. Though the chair was turned away from the door, the Kaiser could see all that happened. Daisuke's face was showing the center of every creen.
A gloved hand motioned for the Chosen Child to move closer. Daisuke's numb legs obeyed as his head desbritely attempted to find a means for his escape. Determined not to show his weakness, Daisuke cleared his throught, "Kaiser. Funny meeting you here."
The Kaiser's throaty chuckle had the strande and paraxoical ability to make Daisuke's blood freeze and his body flush at the same time. Finally the chair turned and Daisuke found himself once again staring into the narrow blue eyes of his opponent. "Dai-chan, you never cease to amuse me. Or should I say, amaze me? Here you are, trapped with death as your best outcome, and you attempt to banter with me? Delightful."
The Kaiser stood and Daisuke inhaled sharply. The Kaiser had a lithe frame but still pocessed soft curves that made Daisuke forget all about Hikari. Her tight suit hugged her frame and left little to the imagination and Daisuke, once again, broke into a sweat.
She laughed again and ran a hand through her spiked hair. "Dai-chan, why must you tempt me so? I should have elimated you as soon as you bumbled in, but still I linger."
"I dunno... Animal magnetism?"
The cloak swished as the Kaiser pushed it from her shoulders. Her breasts seemed just the right size for Daisuke's hands and, as if they were seperate beings, his fists opened and closed as he eyed her. The screens behind her gave her a silvery illumination and Daisuke cursed, for the hundredth time, that he fought against her. her beauty was sharp and ethreal, as if she were some higher being.
The smile on the Kaiser's lips was lazy, but her eyes were hard. "I've oftened wondered about a partnership between us, my darling Daisuke, but you'd never change sides in the middle of a game, would you?"
Daisuke wasn't shallow, despite his bodily reactions to the Kaiser. He shook his head, scoffing. "I'm true to my cause, Kaiser. You're an evil little bitch with too much brains and too little morals. One of these days we'll knock you down off your throne and maybe then we can consider friendship."
"Friendship?" She raised her hand to her mouth and cackled. "Never. You'd have to be an equal then, and there's no way that I could compare myself with you. How about another sort of relationship, though, hmm?"
Vmon shifted and Daisuke suddenly recalled himself. His mission had failed, obviously, but he wasn't necessarily the loser in the game. "I've got to run now, kaiser. It was nice talking to you though." He turned away, biting his lip as he sent a prayer to any listening deity to give him protection a little while longer.
"Wait." The Kaiser's hand shot forward and grasped Daisuke on the shoulder. "Take pity on me, Motomiya. Why did you come down here."
The pressure of her hand was firm, but not painful and Daisuke decided to humor her. Despite her words she did treat him as her equal, not as pests or bothers as she did the other humans. Neither of them was completely immune to the other. "Here," he said as he tossed her Izumi's little black box. "It's a gift from Izumi Koushiro. From one genius to another."
She mumbled something that Daisuke didn't catch but he didn't turn around after she released him. He walked out of the base with measured steps, his sneakers still dangling in his hands. Tomorrow they'd try again, like they always did. And someday he'd finally learn her name.
