Hermonie's mouth opened slightlyed, closed, and then dropped completely. Had she been able to she may have unhinged her jaw altogether to express her utter surprise. "Crookshanks?" The shock of it all had made her voice raw, "Did... did you just speak?"
The cat blinked his eyes slowly and yawned, not impressed at all with Hermonie's display. "Yes."
"You can talk?"
"I should say that it's somewhat obvious," Crookshanks noted dryly. "But in answer to your question, yes I can talk."
Her mind swam with questions and Hermonie had to physcially prop up her head with her elbow to support the weightiness of the situation. "Have you always bee able to... Can other animals... But..."
"I've always been able to talk." The cat stretched out and yawned again, his small white teeth glinting in the firelight. "Petty humans think that they are the be-all-end-all." He looked at his owner, his eyes slanted and mysterious. "You should understand that, what with your work with the House Elves. Humans will list all others as inferior if they do not look exactly as expected."
"But.. If you've always been able to speak... why now?"
"Never," Crookshanks jumped off the table, his tail jauntily sticking straight up like a mast, "Never ask a cat why."
