the deadly sins of fanfiction
May. 7th, 2003 01:02 amI had seen it coming way before the rest of the group had. In fact, I'd bet a million gabillion shmillion gils that I had known it even before they themselves had! I guess I'm a better observer then people give me credit.
It was the way he stopped and held out his hand for her, or possibly the look in her eyes that she got whenever she mentioned his name, but there was some sort of love cliche that blossomed there and once that flower started growing it took off like a weed.
And then finally they admitted it and gave in; one night of star kisses and it was done for them both. I remember spying on them, giddy with happiness even though I was squatting behind bushes alone as I watched and not part of the heartwarming action. I had wanted to jump and squeal in joy and I would have, too, had it not been so utterly beautiful.
So instead I had danced a solitary waltz in the shadows, celebrating as their entwined bodies lit up the night.
And when I had returned to camp all grins and giggles I hadn't say a word. The rest of them suspected something all right, but for the first time in my life I had kept my mouth shut. I sat down silently, smiling like a cat, winking at whoever had the fortune of looking at me, but not one of explanation had passed through my upturned lips.
Lulu's dark looks were looking darker than normal and Auron had an expression that told me that he didn't approve (even though he didn't know). Wakka had been clueless as usual, too busy chasing an insomniacic centipede to notice anything. If Kimahri had known he hadn't shown it, but what else was new? I was the only sunshine in that scene, and I loved myself for it.
"Yunie's real pretty, huh?" I had said to no one in particular, casual and careless. "I bet guys think she's something special, don't you?"
Auron didn't answer, but I hadn't expected him to admit to any aspects that would make him seem human. Kihmari too had said nothing so I had turned my attention towards Lulu and Wakka, determined to spread a little joy without actually releasing the leash on my clandestine information.
"Yah, she's a good girl..." Wakka had admitted slowly, glancing at Lulu to see if she approved his compliament.
Lulu ignored Wakka's searching eyes and tilted her head to one side, her ebony hair spilling like black wine down her pearly skin. "Yes, Yuna is something special," she had concured with a graceful shrug of her alabaster shoulders, "But why do you bring this up now?"
"Oh, no reason." My innocent face had been plastered on good and firm; not even a hard stare from Lulu could crack my protection. "Nope, not a single reason."
Having lost the interest of my friends I had been content to leave the whole subject alone for the time being. With a moon sliver as my light and the dirt beneath my feet as my _____, I had drawn picture after picture of them together and finished off my artwork with a small statement written in Al Bhed. Anyone who could translate would have seen my secret: Tidus + Yunie = Love
