Some cool shit I've gathered during my internet wanderings.

The Louvre, the gendered gaze, and artistic assumptions by mariness: An interesting post about the marginalization of women writers and artists. Mari Ness writes about how anonymous artists are constantly gendered male, despite the evidence that women have been creating art as long as men.

Slaughterhouse 90210: Wow, love this site. Images from TV shows are paired with literary quotes, producing interesting new ways to view both. My Amazon book wishlist has increased practically tenfold.

The Automata/Automaton Blog: A blog with plans for making various gizmos. Makes me wish I were better with my hands.

Did the Jedi Have It Coming? by Tom Janulewicz: A good read about the nature of totalitarianism, even if you're not a Star Wars fan. I agree with this reading of the Jedi; if nothing else, it presents Jedi, midichlorians, and Palpatine seem much more interesting than the way they were shown in Episodes 1-3.

And finally, this quote by tithenai that I found in emilytheslayer's post I Made You This about hand-made gifts: "Anything, anything at all you make me with love and while thinking of me, will be precious, and I will adore it -- not only because it will come from you, but because it will come from you for me. I don't know if I'm being clear at all, but to have an object that is the manifestation of time I've spent in your thoughts is to have a treasure, pure and simple."

Woot!

The Collection/Challenge aspect of AO3? Such a good idea! That's a great way to sort fiction - Can't wait to see it implemented in its entirety.

Hey [personal profile] renay, is A03 still looking for wranglers? I was perusing the Digimon section this morning and some of the tags are borked. There are multiple entries for characters and ships, and they haven't been consolidated.

This seems pretty damn cool: The Sci-Fi Romance Blitz! A bunch of blogs are giving away free - yes, you heard me, free - books; all you need to do is post a comment on the threads.

I do love me some free books.

Found this great post when wandering around LJ this morning: To Develop Your Writer's Intuition, You Must First Read Like a Maniac by Justine Musk.

"Reading is living. It is a way of touching minds with some of the most remarkable minds that exist or ever did exist. Reading takes you deeper into the nature of reality, helps you penetrate the human condition itself. It enlarges your consciousness. It provides you with experiences you never could have had in any other way (or just haven’t had yet). And when you put the book down, everything you take away from it helps you live your life with added depth and richness. Fiction may not provide you with the same kind of information as non-fiction, but information is not always knowledge, and knowledge is not always wisdom. Fiction – the best fiction – is wise, and makes you just a little bit wiser, and you can take that wisdom and apply it across all the different parts of your life."

This is a great essay about what a person needs to be a writer - Namely books. I agree with Musk and I can relate to her as a compulsive, obsessive reader. Between The Boy and me, we've filled three bookcases in our apartment, filled them so that books are stacked in rows of twos or piled up. There are books on our desks, on the kitchen table, on our bureaus, and I've got a tower of books next to my side of the bed. Books! Love 'em!

"Reading is the inhale, writing is the exhale."

WOW. YES. YES THAT'S AN AWESOME WAY OF PUTTING IT.

Thank you!

Wow, thank you! Some awesome anonymous person has given me a paid account! Whoever you are, I can't tell you how much I appreciate this gift. The past few months have been tough for me, and this really lifted my spirits. I can't wait to explore all the new account features.

Again, thank you so much. Wow. What a great gesture. Thank you!

I want to learn how to write/use/program PHP. Can anyone recommend any good sites or books that deal with it? All I know is that my HTML coding is ancient at this point. I haven't designed a website since high school.

I want to make a Jecht fansite, since all the sites dedicated to him and to Auron/Jecht have closed. Poor guy needs some loving! And while I'm at it, I want to make a Willis fansite, and maybe one for Yuffie. Or one for Yuffie and Rikku called "Double Trouble," which I started about a hundred years ago but never got off the ground.

So, where does an internetard like me start?

Bookstove has a list of Five Good Books About Genre Writing by Actual Authors, which includes The Writer’s Guide to Everyday Life in the Wild West: From 1840-1900 by Candy Moulton.

MUST GET THIS BOOK TO WRITE MORE REALISTIC 3:10 TO YUMA PORN.

Next time I have an Amazon gift certificate, I'm getting the hell outta that book.

I did a fair amount of research for TTBtM, which takes place around the same time period as Yuma, last year and then a little more when I started work on the second draft. Medical care and fashion were my main topics of study, since my main characters are most interested in those subjects. I think I avoided any major anachronisms or snafus in general; we'll see what my writers group has to say.

Here's another interesting link about writing: Villains vs. antagonists by Marie Brennan.
