6. What do you wish people who read your journal knew about you?

Hm, this is an unusual question. I think for the most part my writing reflects my personality - at least I hope it does. I guess I want people who read my journal to know how grateful and happy I am to be part of their community.

[community profile] fannish5: 5 favorite/least favorite royal characters

1. Princess Zelda (The Legend of Zelda series) - Ever since Ocarina, she's been one of my favorite female characters. The princess-to-be-rescued trope usually annoys me, for obvious reasons, but the recent games have put a spin on the tired cliche, and Zelda becomes greater than just a locked-up, passive girl. She has strength and wisdom, and when she kicks ass she really kicks ass.

2. Prince Zuko (Avatar) - C'mon. The angst! The redemption! The awkwardness!

3. Princess Azula (Avatar) - The way her character was developed - I'm still amazed at how much awesome Azula is. For a children's show, hell for any show, it's a rare thing to find a powerful, ambitious, intelligent female character like Azula. Also she's a fascinating foil to her brother, and his rebirth and redemption makes her fall and failure all the more poignant.

4. Ganondorf (The Legend of Zelda series) - He was so, so cool in Ocarina. The dark king who appears in the swirling sand of the wasteland, integrating himself into the royal court and then killing for the throne as a storm rages outside the castle walls. <3

5. Yuffie (Final Fantasy VII) - ...She's kinda a princess, right?

5. How about when you're not on the computer?
I spend a lot of time commuting, and while I probably could use those hours doing homework, I try to give myself a break from the computer. Also, despite using a small laptop, hauling a computer around does a number on my shoulder. On the train and subway I listen to music, read, or fiddle with my DS or PSP. I just finished Get Shorty by Elmore Leonard, which I loved, and am currently playing Dissidia, which I'm digging.

Like I said for #4, now that it's nice out, we spend much more time outside, either walking around or relaxing in our postage stamp of a yard. My favorite walk is up to the park and library; in Manhattan, I like wandering around Union Square and down to St. Mark's Place.

3. Do you crosspost? Why or why not?
Yes, most of the time. Real-life crap gets sent to my personal LJ and story/fandom-related posts go to my story/fandom-related LJ. I've been at LJ so long that I can't - and don't want to - leave it completely.

4. What do you do online when you're not on DW?
I'm a student, so I spend a lot of time getting to school, being in school, doing school work, and then bitching about all three. When I'm not doing any of those, I watch movies, play video games, or read. now that it's spring I'm spending more time outside, either walking around our neighborhood or chilling in our tiny backyard.

1. Why did you sign up for Dreamwidth?
I'd been using LJ for years - since about 2000 or so - but didn't like the way the site was being run after Brad sold it. I tried out GJ, which promptly folded, then moved over to IJ. But it wasn't a perfect fit; the whole "insane" theme got old fast, spam was/is outrageous, and most importantly, I never had the sense that I was joining a community, the way I had with LJ. When DW opened, I wrote it off as another LJ-clone, but I watched its growth with increasing interest. LJ continued down the path of asshatness and so when I was able, I signed up with DW to give it a go.

2. Why did you choose your journal name?
I've been using forms of "Jae" as my online name since early high school.

Stole this from someone in my network list. Happy World Book Day, everyone! Support your local library by borrowing a bagful of books today.

The book I am reading:
The Death of Achilles by Boris Akunin. It's the fourth in a detective series set in turn-of-the-century Russia. I am loving this series; hero Erast Fandorin is part Sherlock Holmes and part Poirot, and now apparently in this book, part ninja. Interspersed among the crimes are great bits of humor; Akunin has a light, witty touch that brightens the characters and the sometimes dark plots.

The book I am writing:
Heh. Still working on TTBtM, my 2009 nano. I'm in the process of re-writing the opening again, which is probably the worst thing I could do at this point. I really need to finish a draft, not constantly re-start one.

The book I love most:
That's impossible to say. There are so many books that I love: The Last Unicorn, The Orphan Tales, Winter Rose, Wuthering Heights, Lady Audley's Secret...

The last book I received as a gift:
China Mieville's Kraken, from Pete. Haven't read it, but am planning to start it soon.

The last book I gave as a gift:
I think that was Murakami Haruki's The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, which I gave to my mom for Christmas.

The nearest book on my desk:
Two books for school: Fundamentals of Collection Development and Management and HTML, XHTML & CSS.

The last book I bought for myself:
Last week was the annual used book sale at the church on 6th, so I came home with two bags of books. One of the cool ones I found among the piles was Love Intrigues of Royal Courts by Thorton Hall, circa 1910.

Tomorrow's John Lennon's birthday - he would have been 70 this year - and to coincide with it, the biopic Nowhere Boy is opening here in the States. We're seeing it tomorrow, as well as LennoNYC, which is showing for free in the park. He loved this city. Yoko does too; she still lives in the Dakota.

Another day late. Crazy busy yesterday and when I got home form school, we had The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit to watch.

Anyway, another John and Paul quote today, for the Ivor Novello awards ceremony in 1967. I like this one because they're both trying to give the other one credit - They did that a lot, even after the break-up. The respect they had for each others' abilities was immense. (From Beatles Interviews Database.)

Q: "This (first award) goes to the A-side of the record issued in 1966 which achieved the highest certified British sales in the period the 1st of January to the 31st of December 1966. You may have been wondering whether the Beatles have won anything. They did get one or two awards. This is the first of them, and it goes to 'Yellow Submarine.' Best-selling A-side number in Britain last year, for which John and Paul you get this."

PAUL: "We are truly grateful."

JOHN: (excitedly) "Great, great."

...

Q: "Good. Who was principally responsible, Paul or John?"

JOHN: "Paul."

PAUL: "John, really."

JOHN & PAUL: "No. No."

And here's from a little later in the same interview:
Q: "Apart from being the runner-up in the 'most performed' section, I think that must have been the most recorded number last year... must've been about 400 versions of it. You must have heard some of them. Is there any one that you think is a standout performance?"

JOHN: "Uhh, one by a young fellow called Paul McCartney had a sort of plaintive approach."

PAUL: (laughs)

In 1966 the Beatles went to Japan to perform at the Nippon Budokan, an event arena in Tokyo. Prior to the Beatles the arena was strictly for martial arts performances; it was a sacred space. They were the first rock and roll band to play there - Now of course it's a famous music venue.

Not everyone was happy with this change. The Beatles received death threats and for their protection were sequestered in their hotel. To keep them occupied, their Japanese promoter brought paper and paint; each got a corner of the paper for his own art.

The Beatles loved it.

John had gone to art college before the band hit it big, and Paul's a talented artist. George and Ringo were just as excited about it. I love the pictures of them gathered around the painting together - They're all so intent on their art.

From Sing My Heart.

Here's one of the Beatles' music videos - They called them promo videos back then, but the premise is the same (and yep, another first - the invented the music video). This one's one of my favorite - John and Paul are adorably goofy. He keeps mugging at the camera and making faces at Paul, who giggles back. The camera has to keep cutting over to George or Ringo whenever John and Paul back down into laughter, and they even had to do the video a couple of times - notice the different jackets? - but every time it ends up the same.

A day late - I was crazy sick last night when I got home from school and just lay on the couch and tried not to die.

Anyway, here's another quote from when they were just starting to get big. I love how honest and modest they are here; no one expected them to be big, especially not the lads themselves. From October 3, 1963 for BBC Radio (Beatles Interviews Database):

GEORGE: "To be a guitarist, you're supposed to practice a couple of hours a day. But, I mean, I don't do that."

RINGO: "To be ANYTHING, you're supposed to practice a couple of hours a day."

PAUL: "Yeah."

GEORGE: "Well you know, I mean, the thing is... Individually we're all... (pause) I suppose we're all crummy musicians, really."
jaebility: (beatles // cartoon)

"Yer Blues" is a kick ass rock and roll jam that illustrates John Lennon's darker side. He suffered from depression his whole life, an illness that stemmed from his fear of abandonment. He had good reason for this insecurity: as a small child, his parents took him down to the beach and then made him decided between them. After he chose his mother Julia, his father walked out of their lives. Some years later he was removed from his mother's home, who was deemed an unsuitable parent, and placed with his aunt. He had a rocky relationship with both women, but stayed close with both. He was 17 when his mother was killed.

Anyway, "Yer Blues" covers both his worry ("so lonely...") and his despair ("...wanna die"). It's from the White Album, which also features the wistful song "Julia." This version is a from the Rolling Stone's Rock N Roll Circus, which was an awesome trainwreck of music and drugs. That's a young Eric Clapton on lead. And check out Yoko Ono rolling around in a bag.

From an interview from August 28, 1963 for the BBC (Beatles Interviews Database):

JOHN: "'How long are you gonna last?' Well, you can't say, you know. You can be big-headed and say, 'Yeah, we're gonna last ten years.' But as soon as you've said that you think, 'We're lucky if we last three months,' you know."

PAUL: "Well, obviously we can't keep playing the same sort of music until we're about forty-- sort of, old men playing 'From Me To You'-- nobody is going to want to know at all about that sort of thing. You know, we've thought about it, and probably the thing that John and I will do, uhh, will be write songs-- as we have been doing as a sort of sideline now-- we'll probably develop that a bit more we hope. Who knows. At forty, we may not know how to write songs anymore."

GEORGE: "I hope to have enough money to go into a business of my own by the time we, umm, do 'flop.' (laughs) And we don't know-- it may be next week, it may be two or three years. But I think we'll be in the business, either up there or down there, for at least another four years."

RINGO: "I've always fancied having a ladies hairdressing salon."

(Beatles giggling)

RINGO: (undeterred) "You know, a string of them, in fact! Strut 'round in me stripes and tails, you know. 'Like a cup of tea, Madam?'"

John's birthday's coming up - He would have been 70 this year. There are all sorts of memorial concerts and shows going on this week in celebration; and not one to miss a chance to proclaim my love of him and the Beatles, I'm going to post quotes, videos, songs, whatevers to mark the 8 days leading up to his birthday.

Here's post one (a day late, unfortunately). From an interview from August 23, 1963 with Klas Burling (Beatles Interviews Database):

KLAS: "That's Paul, and he's supposed to be the sweet boy in this family, no?"

PAUL: (jokingly) "Aww, shuttup."

JOHN: "His dad was a Mars bar."

PAUL: (laughs)

1. Tell us about your favorite writing project/universe that you’ve worked with and why.
2. How many characters do you have? Do you prefer males or females?
3. How do you come up with names, for characters (and for places if you’re writing about fictional places)?
4. Tell us about one of your first stories/characters!
I wrote an atrocious fantasy story about dragons for 6th grade English. Before that I wrote an atrocious fantasy story about cats for a 4th or 5th grade assignment. I'm a big fan of fantasy. And atrocities. My first story though, I think, was about a British solider from Revolutionary War who ended up in modern times. If I'm remembering correctly, I thought that up after a school trip to Lexington/Concord. Even as a kid I apparently had a thing for Brits.

Like a lot of fans, I had a cast of self-inserts and Mary Sues for my first fandoms: a Sailor Moon character (named Sailor Sagittarius, after my zodiac sign); a girl from Boston who moved down south for Tom & Huck; a client-turned-detective who impresses Basil from The Great Mouse Detective; a small-village girl who gets caught up in Link's quest; a chorus girl who rescues Erik from despair. Wish-fulfillment, basically.

[community profile] fannish5: Name five characters who probably shouldn't try to be monogamous.

1) Cloud Strife (FFVII) - Who doesn't Cloud hook up with? I've read him convincingly paired with Zack, Aeris, Tifa, Sephiroth, Reno, Yuffie, Rufus, Vincent, Kadaj, and Jenova. And that's just a list from off the top of my head. Maybe it's because Cloud's personality can be interpreted so differently? Even in canon he goes through such extreme shifts in character. I can't settle on OTPs with him either, since he's so closely tied to so many characters. Pair him with Zak and Aeris and Sephiroth need to fit in there somewhere. Pair him with Tifa and again Aeris can't be excluded.

2) Harry Potter - Like Cloud, Harry can be interpreted in such vastly different ways. He can have great chemistry with practically anyone in the books: Ron, Ginny, Remus, Sirius, Snape, Luna, Draco, the twins, Neville... And even crack!pairings like Narcissa, Lucius, Bellatrix, and Voldemort work for me.

3) Auron (FFX) - Auron's a little different, at least in my mind. Unlike Cloud and Harry, who're the town bicycles, Auron doesn't really have sexual compatibility with a lot of characters. Hm, not sure if I can explain myself. I guess with Harry and Cloud, I'm willing to read and write stories where love is more loosely defined, or doesn't come into the picture at all. I always figured Auron as someone who falls in love slowly, but then with eternal devotion - In short, I can't picture him not being in love. Pairing him with Rikku doesn't make his love for Braska and Jecht fade.

4) Yagami Hikari (Digimon) - Hikari's another who I could never settle on a OTP with. I think she's equally in love with Takeru as she is with Miyako.

5) ...Um. Jecht? Uh. Is it painfully obvious that my fandoms are few and far between? So instead I will muse of sex vs. love. When I get emotional invested in a character, I want him/her to fall in love. In fact, in Love, with a capital L. It's the romantic in me and the romance novel fan in me: A happy ending needs a resolution that includes love. Anyway, so when I daydream about my favorite characters, I create little love stories for them. As much as I like Cloud and Harry, they've never been among my favorite characters, so I don't need to plan out a happy (monogamous) love life for them.
