Title: Recondite
Fandom: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Characters: Malon and Ganondorf, some unnamed Gerudo
Prompt: Yellow
Word Count: 242
Rating: PG
Summary: A farm girl from the green fields of Hyrule can't be expected to understand the ancient goddess of a desert wasteland.
Author's Notes: "Recondite is from Latin reconditus, past participle of recondere, 'to store back,' i.e., 'out of the way,' hence 'to hide'; itself from re-, 'back, again' condere, 'to put away, to store.' Thus, recondite knowledge is 'hidden' (because of obscurity or difficulty) from the understanding of the average person." Thank you, dictionary.com, for giving me such a good word-of-the-day! And here is my good ol' table of death.

The temple had a name, Malon supposed, but she could not be trusted with it. She stood outside the cluster of Gerudo warriors as they whispered in their strange sandy language to Ganondorf. The Dark King replied, sometimes in his native tongue, sometimes in Hylian with a sharp grin thrown over his shoulder at her. The Gerudo resented this, too, apparently, because they'd send their own glares over at the corner where Malon stood. Clearly and wordlessly they reaffirmed their hatred of Malon, though her only offense, as far as she could tell, was existing.

She ignored their narrowed eyes and stared at the yellow goddess. The massive statue guarding the door of temple may have been painted once, but eons of wind and sand had scraped away any color. She was still impressive, though bleached and worn. Cracks were forming in her massive arms and noble face, and Malon wondered how much longer the stern goddess could stand watch over the temple. The tension lines in the stone looked like lines of worry and contemplation, but the lips were pursed with grim determination. This was a desert goddess, a far cry from the lush and smiling faces of the sacred triad worshiped back at home.

Malon stared up at the goddess until her eyes watered and head throbbed. Then, when her skin prickled and stun from the heat and sun, Ganondorf opened the doors to the temple and invited her into the shadows.
