war against sin
Oct. 28th, 2004 09:59 pmAuron cursed as another missile whistled over head. "Take cover!" He yelled as he ducked, shielding his head as the explosion near by shock the world. They were coming down like snow now, it seemed. As soon as they recovered from a blast another scream from an approaching missile sent them back into panic. The soldiers were fighting like dogs now; all teeth and wide-eyed, scared senseless by the endless blasts.
"Sir! Sir!" A frantic, high-pitched shriek was the first sound after the immediate, chilling, silence that followed in a missile's wake. "Sir, we need you!"
Auron scrambled to his feet and followed the voice through the dust and smoke filled air. "Solider, where are you?"
"Here, sir, here."
He practically tripped over her - the solider was crouched near the protection of a dead tank; the girl -she couldn't have been much older than seventeen- was a slip of a thing, even with her equipment. Auron knelt down, peering as best as he could through the rubble. "What's the problem?"
"Sir, he's injured, real bad. The missile hit about 30 feet from here and rocks went everywhere. I-" She paused and took a deep, shaking breath. "I threw myself under the tank but Tidus -he's infantry, like me, sir- wasn't quick enough."
The boy -damn, they were sending kids out here!- was breathing, but bloody. He coughed and twisted in pain and Auron inhaled sharply and shook his head. He'd probably die out here, in the sand and shadows, and his body left behind in the retreat.
"No." The girl's face was determined, all traces of anxiety gone. "I won't leave him here. I'll carry him back myself, if you won't."
Auron swore again. It'd be hard, if not impossible, to get a medteam in. They were still primarily in the rear, holding back until Sin saw fit to cease the barbardment of bombs. It wouldn't be until nightfall, if not later, before they'd be able to search the field for the wounded. He didn't want to try to move the boy when the kid was little better than a bleeding pulp of a person.
"Soldier-"
"Rikku, sir. Rikku, daughter of Cid. You know Cid, don't you, sir?"
Auron raised on eyebrow. His aquaintance with Cid was neither here nor there. "Yes, but-"
"I'm sure my father would be real happy when I told him how you helped me," Rikku interupted again. "He'd probably ask to have you promoted."
He couldn't help but furrow his eyebrows in surprise and bemusement. "Are you trying to bribe me, soldier?"
