the plink of piano keys
Apr. 13th, 2003 10:56 pmAt any random moment I could turn my head and watch Ayami on her tireless campaign to catch every single stray cat in Tochigi. Her long hang billowed out that a black flag as she ran around, screaming, shreiking, praying, and cursing, or doing whatever she felt would aid in her task. She was successful a damn good amount of time; she had caught, spayed, blessed, and adopted out a least forty cats in the past few months. We had three currently in our temple room and fifteen more in the building. Surprsingly the demand seemed to rise everytime she gave another cat out; who wouldn't like a blessed cat as a gift?
"Praise the gods!" I heard Ayami's voice echo from some alleyway. "I dub thee Oikatairu* for thou was a pain in the ass to hunt down!"
"Konichiwa, Ayami-chan!" I yelled from my window, leaning out so that she could see me. "Another neko, eh? Taking him to the temple?"
"Hai~!" With the cat placed on her head, Ayami waved back with both hands free. "I'll be back by dinner!"
What a sight she was, a priestess dressed in full regale walking royally down the street with a cat perched on her head. Ayami-chan was a curious creature to those who did not know her and an even stranger girl to those who did.
She was the priestess to a Ama-no-Uzume temple that she herself had built. Her money came from old family wealth and she spent it wisely, praising the gods and goddesses of our past fruitful years with the gold she had inherited. Her temple was well-kept well-respected, even in its youth. It was visited often by elders and schoolchildren alike; girls had their fortunes told by Ayami, wives came for blessings for their unborn children, men came good luck charms, and boys came to worship the priestess herself. It was whispered that she had the most powerful magic in all of Japan and the owners of her cats swore by it.
*Ayami combines two Japanese words to come up with this cat's name: oikakeru - to chase down and katai - difficult
