I can't believe how different my word counts are:

NaNo - 37144
Google Docs - 38118
Written? Kitten! - 38527

I call shenanigans!

I have the same problem, especially with Google Docs. Seems like this one (http://www.wordcounttool.com/) works best for me, although I don't know how well it would do 30k+ words, since I don't think I've used it for that much at once. How are these things getting different numbers?!? /rant

I usually use Microsoft Word for its word counter. Who knows how accurate that is, though..

Yep, I think it was the special formatting. Curse you, italics!

Maybe some count spaces as words, while others don't? To a computer, even a space registers. You'll see this on Twitter where several spaces will count as characters. That might be due to the rich text editor. Or not. I'm guessing.

Try copying the whole text into a plain text editor, that won't copy over any special formatting like bold or italic, then copying that plain text into those same three word counters.
