Princesses didn't muck out stables. Princesses wore gowns of silk dripping with pearls and tip-toed on velvet rugs; they did not wear boots while stamping through piles of crap and hay. Princess Zelda had a scepter and Malon had a shovel.

Princess Zelda was gone. Dead, probably, said the Gerudo, who shrugged at rumors of a blond-haired hero who had been seen at the border of the Lost Woods. Alive, certainly, said Ganondorf, who disappeared into the bowels of the castle to study. Malon secretly hoped Zelda was alive, because she couldn't imagine a Hyrule without its princess.

She sighed and blew an errant strand of hair out of her eyes and then wiped her sweat-wet face. Boots were more comfortable than high heels, anyway.

One-liners, a la [livejournal.com profile] buttonsandblows.

FFX
Jecht's even less dressed than usual and is currently dancing an awful jig around the campfire; Auron closes his eyes again and wishes to hell that it's all some sort of terrible nightmare, but he's never had that kind of luck.

"Ally-oop," Jecht lifts her up onto his broad shoulders and Rikku finally gets the satisifaction of being the tallest in the crowd; she taps her heels happily on his chest and tries not to drip too much ice cream into his hair.

FFX/FFVII
Auron's fingers write the symbols of her name across her bare back and Yuffie shivers and wiggles and finally realizes that having a personal samurai isn't all bad.

It's goddamn annoying and admiting it tastes like stale, warm beer in his mouth, but Cid finally growls out the words that Rikku's been dying to hear: "The design worked, kid; the fucking thing flew."

Rikku dances and shakes her tush and pops the cork on the cheap bottle of champagne she'd been storing in the back of her fridge for months; later, when even Cid is happy that she won the contest, Rikku feels like she's flying in her airship, even though her feet are firm (or mostly firm, at least) on the ground.

Zelda
Malon's long hair is getting rough at the edges; it's been at least a year since it's last been cut, but she's still not sure she trusts Ganondorf with a blade at her neck.

The dry air is knives in her lungs and her heart wrenches painful thumps in her chest, but the sword clenched in her bloody hand remains unwavering until Ganondorf claps his approval and she allows herself to sink to the stained ground.

He reached out and grabbed my wrist, the soft warmth of his long fingers curling around my hand a strange comparison to the rough leather of his glove. I shook my arm halfheartedly, a weak gesture to show my discomfort, and Link loosened his grip and stepped away.

"Sorry," he mumbled, looking like the child I had met years eariler, "I didn't mean - that is, I didn't want-" He stopped and exhaled a heavy breath before dropping to the ground. He stared up at me for a moment and I folded my legs neatly, lowering myself down to sit next to him. "Look Malon," he tried again, his voice pleading and begging like a wounded dog, "Everything's all jumbled up. I can't decide if I'm a man or a boy. And that sounds odd, I know, but my body's old but my mind's not, but it might be, since I didn't really jump into the future, I just slept through the present." He paused again and then threw his sword aside with an angry growl. "How can they expect me to do this?"

My gaze slid across the meadow until it reached the castle - a dark thorn in the countryside. Ganondorf, Ganondorf... Could one man really destroy so much? Was the situation really so depserate that time itself had to be rearrange in order to stop him? My fingers dug themselves into my hair, twisting it into knots. I couldn't share Ganondorf's blame, could I? A placid and dumb farm girl couldn't affect fate, surely.

"He'll kill me for sure. He almost did kill me, last time we met. How am I supposed to beat him? They made some sort of mistake. I'm not a hero! It's hopeless... It's hopeless..." Link's desperation rolled off him in palpable waves, but I could do nothing but stare at him uselessly. What words could I say? What solution could I present?

My mouth locked shut. Bewteen my pounding heartbeats, I could hear the frantic hum of the last insects of the autumn, singing their existence before the frost killed them off. Finally, a numb hand touched his shoulder, and I patted him as if he were a horse.

Her father had always warned her not to dare so much, not to dream for the impossible. Be content with the same things, find peace in afternoon naps or a cool glass of fresh milk or the sunshine on a spring morning. A dutiful daughter, Malon had reigned in her wild streak and concentrated on the cost of hay and the selling price of eggs and the patterns of rain. But, when the opportunity had presented itself, Malon had leapt blindly toward an uncertain future.

She had gambled and won - in her possession were priceless jewels and jewelry with names like Circle of Fire or Goddess' Tears, gowns of silk and velvet that whispered against her skin when she walked, horses in every color and pattern imaginable, a castle that sat on a hill and overlooked the green hills of the kingdom.

Hers. Hers.

He said so, murmuring promises against her sweat-slick neck as they entwined together. Anything that she could ever want was reachable; if she could dream it, he could bring it to her.

Except -

He dragged his fingers under the curve of her breast and growled curses and prayers in his strange language and made her sob his name, but, even so, Malon understood that she couldn't be granted everything.

She could never truly have him, and her other winnings were rendered worthless.

It didn't take Malon long to realize that she liked male nudity. The revelation was a satisifying one and was followed by a second discovery - sex was great.

Virginity had been forced upon her; the war had brushed away any desire that would have blossomed with puberty. Days were spent wearily completely her chores and nights were filled with desperate attempts to keep the horses warm in the unnatural, bitter cold that had slipped over Hyrule. The dances and feasts that her parents had attended in their youth were replaced with funerals and fastings.

But here, safe within the gray walls of a stolen castle, she could lie naked under the silk covers and stay abed until the afternoon sun shown through her windows. She took baths in scented water and draped the princess' jewels over her wet breasts as she washed her long hair and scrubbed her feet. There was an awakening, like spring's birth from winter, and it was wickedly delicious.

Ganondorf was a quandery. Malon had wondered at first why he had gone through the trouble of bringing her to the castle when the Gerudo warriors who stood idly at the doors and picked at their fingers probably would have been more than delighted to satiated his every need. And she also puzzled over his treatment of her - he generally ignored her, engaging only in small, polite conversation when their paths occasionally met.

At first she was happy to doze the day away, rousing only to wander to the stables and admire the collection of horses that the Gerudos had acquired. Bordeom eventually inspired her to explore the twisting hallways and open the endless supply of doors. When she had successfully mapped out the floorplan of the castle, she turned her attention to the inhabitants. The Gerudos weren't too impressive and Malon quickly grew weary of the verbal spurs that inevitably occured when she tried to talk with them. Ganondorf, who seemed much less demonic now that she had rifled through his wardrobe and watched him study scrolls during breakfast, became the focus of her thoughts.

She was sick of waiting, of sitting passive, of fulfilling his expectations of her. She wasn't sure what role she was supposed to play, but Malon decided one day after hiding with the horses in the royal stable that she would forge her own life, scruples and destiny be damned. She wnated to be recognized as more than just a farm girl, as more than just a captive, as more than just a fleeting interest of a bored man.

She had faced storms much worse - lightening that shattered trees and lit fire to the barn, winds that had torn out fences from the muddy ground, rain that created rivers in the field strong enough to pull her feet out from under her. But the castle in the storm twisted the weather around it and the dark magic that Ganondorf had pulled from the shadows tainted the air until her ears heard the hissing of unknown languages in the howling winds and shrieks of laughter in the booms of thunder. She stood at the window until her fingers curled from the cold - she told hersekf that it was for that reason she climbed back into her bed, and not because of the patterns of rain splatter she saw on the window glass.

"I couldn't sleep," she explained to Ganondorf's back and she parted the covers, "The thunder..."

He was awake, as he always seemed to be. He rolled over when she spoke, but did not reach for her. "Not frightened, surely."

"Not frightened," she shook her head, pausing as a crack of thunder shattered the night, "But this isn't like the storms over the farm."

"No," he conceded, "Something is causing this."

He still hadn't moved toward her, so Malon wiggled in next to him, pulling his arms around her, "You've upset someone again," she said with a short laugh, "The dragon? Or the goddesses? Or perhaps something else is dooming you now?"

"If the castle crumbles, it'll take you with it," his voice was mild enough to take away the sting of his words. "And I've been cursed for as long as I can remember."

"Since before I was born, probably," Malon agreed.
